Trail Rides

Idaho outfitters offer trail rides by the hour or day. Trail rides are available around resort areas near Coeur d’Alene, Sun Valley, McCall, Yellowstone, and the Grand Tetons. Riders also explore the mountains and canyons around Bogus Basin near Boise, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, and the Snake River Birds of Prey Area. Many guest ranches and lodges have wranglers to guide guests on custom rides along "Wild and Scenic" rivers, into forests and meadows, and up to high mountain lakes.

Horses on these rides are well-trained. Wranglers are safety conscious and knowledgeable about their areas. Riders hear stories and learn history and see geography while enjoying some of the state’s most beautiful views.

Summer Pack Trips

Idaho is full of remote backcountry where no roads and few people go. Outfitters enjoy taking visitors into these areas on horseback to discover hidden alpine lakes, ancient Indian trails, secluded fishing streams, old mining camps and high mountain vistas. Horse trips are offered in all of Idaho’s major forests and wilderness areas, including the Clearwater, Targhee, and Panhandle Forests; and the Sawtooth, Selway-Bitterroot, and River of No Return Wildernesses; as well as Yellowstone National Park and the Teton, Pioneer, White Cloud, and Seven Devils Mountains.

On fully outfitted pack trips, experienced wranglers take care of horses, tents, gear, and wholesome meals around a campfire. Drop camps also are available for hunters or hikers who would rather do their own walking and camping after the horses carry their gear into a site.

Llama Trips

Llamas are gentle, sure-footed companions on day hikes or overnight camping trips into Idaho’s mountains. These South-American pack animals carry food and supplies while guests enjoy the scenery. Llama trips and tours are offered near the central Idaho resort areas of McCall and Sun Valley.

Cattle Drives and Round-ups

Stay with a rancher and work with the wranglers. It’s a great way to ride horses and see Idaho’s cattle country.
